Fun in the Snow with Kids

fun in the snow with kids is a great family adventure

When those first few snowflakes start to fall, my kids excitedly run to the window with visions of building snowmen and sledding in their heads. Before they run out the door, I make sure they’ve put on their gloves, hats, and snow boots. They gather their snowman building supplies and the sled – ready to take on the day in our snow-covered yard. I’ve found in North Carolina, we must take advantage of the winter snow when it comes because it tends to melt quickly. But, if you’re in an area where you get plenty of snow, you may need more equipment to really enjoy winter’s pleasures. Or, if you’re planning a quick trip with the family to a snowy destination, you might want to bring some items along to help get the most out of your adventure. Here are some products we recommend to get you ready for fun in the snow.

Sleds/Toboggan

Sleds come in many different shapes, sizes, and prices. They’re also very versatile, not just for fun. Sleds come in handy when trudging through the snow with several items so you can use the sled to more easily carry your belongings. According to www.bestreviews.com, the Slippery Racer Downhill Xtreme Toboggan Snow Sled is the best adult sled/toboggan on the market at $55.95 on Amazon. It’s perfect for 1-2 riders and can be used in tandem with an adult and child. It’s heavy duty material makes it quite durable, much better than the plastic sleds that break apart after one use. And, it includes a convenient pull rope. The number one “best seller” sled  on Amazon is Airhead Classic | 1-2 Person Snow Sled. It’s a better price at $28.06 and fits 1-2 people with lanyard included for easy tow to the top of the hill. It’s reviews are positive for sturdiness and durability.

SnowFeet/Snow Shoes

These may be the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time. SnowFeet are a combination of skis and skates. You can use them to go downhill on the slopes or hiking trails, as well as in snow parks, sledding hills or your backyard. Although they’re expensive around $200.00 for one pair, they’re durable, light, and small enough to fit into any luggage. They’re one size fits all so the adults can share them. Here’s the good news: Amazon has a variety of mini ski skates available at a much better price starting at $54.59, however the reviews on the mini ski skates aren’t as high. Snow shoes are fun for younger kids who want to look like mommy or daddy in their SnowFeet. The Yukon Sno-Bash Kids Snowshoe is perfect for boys and girls up to 100lbs. You can find them on Amazon starting at $119. They come in vibrant, fun colors and have a coated steel crampon for grip in any snow condition.

Toys

Don’t forget to pack some toys for the kids to play in the snow. You can grab a snowman kit from Amazon, Target or Walmart for less than $10 that includes hat, scarf, eyes, nose, mouth and button pieces. If your kids aren’t into building a snowman, maybe they’d prefer to build an igloo! All you need is a rectangular plastic container to sculpt a few snow blocks and place them on top of each other. Or, gather up the family for a snowball fight. You can use one of these great snowball maker kits on Amazon for $31.95, or just use your own hands and imagination.
