If I could do anything, what is my dream?

I took a class that involved doing personal assessments. One of the questions from the class was “what would I do if I could do anything in the world. Here is my answer?”

I have read that when we are little children, we believe that the world is ours. Anything we want to have or anything that we want to accomplish is attainable. It is not until we start to get older that people like our teachers, parents, and other adults tell us to be more realistic about the future. They say things like, “You are not tall enough,” or “People from (insert location) don’t become that,” or “They will never let you do that.” However, these excuses are only limitations if we allow them to limit us.

Owning a farm in Santa Cruz

If I could be and do anything that I wanted, I would love to own farms in France and Santa Cruz, CA. On my farms, I would have rooms or cabins available for rent like a bed & breakfast. Plus there would be enough room to house students and/or people who would like to learn farm skills, culinary arts, or other transferable skills to better their lives.

My farm in France

Since I was a kid, I always dreamt of living in France. I have traveled around most of the country and have come to love the French way of life, especially those who live in the countryside. I also love the Santa Cruz area. As an adult, I have felt a need to serve others and having a farm/B&B would give me an opportunity to not only run a profitable business, but allow me to create a program that offers students a hands-on learning experience. This farm/B&B can provide less fortunate people an opportunity to come to an area with fresh air and healthy food, while learning trade skills to get a job and better their lives.

Why a farm?

Why a farm you ask?  I have always enjoyed working and being outdoors. I love spending time around animals, and I maintain a year round garden that I use to feed my family. It would be a wonderful experience to grow an abundant amount of food to feed my family, my neighbors, and others in the community. It would also be rewarding to  work with local schools and universities to develop programs that involve organic gardening, international trade, and the hospitality services involved with managing a bed and breakfast.

Why a bed & breakfast?

I have worked in the hospitality industry.  It takes both creativity and structure to find ways to produce a successful result or satisfy a guest. I’ve always enjoyed that contrast. As with farming, I have appreciated the before and after effect of planting and growing. In gardening or farming, there is a direct coalition between the amount of work that is applied to the result that is achieved. My hope in running a profitable farm/B&B business is that I can give myself both time to work independently and with others to balance my “people fuel.”

Finding a way to fulfill the dream of owning a farm, plus running a bed and breakfast in both France and in Santa Cruz, creates a wonderful environment for my children to grow up, while learning about people and farming. What’s more, it would provide me with the joy of being outdoors, working in an industry that I love, and helping people on a higher level than I could ever imagine. I would feel like a little kid successfully living his dream!  The only thing that could make this dream job any better is if the property in France had a castle. Then I would be that little kid living in a castle, owning a farm in France, teaching people how to cook, and raising multilingual children — a dream come true.
